Thin Slicing

Back in my college days, one lecturer asked us a simple but striking question, “What is the first thing you notice when you meet someone for the first time? Is it their posture, stature, or dress code?” Before we could overthink it, he guided us toward the obvious truth. We notice the dress code first, and our minds instantly categorise them. Scientists call this thin-slicing, the brain’s quick, automatic judgments based on limited information.

That lesson has stayed with me for years. Every Sunday, before planning my outfits for the week, I review my schedule to ensure that wherever I go, my appearance communicates the message I intend. But the impact goes beyond wardrobe planning. It has made me more aware of how my brain tries to place people into boxes. Because of that awareness, I can catch myself when I start judging others based solely on their clothing and intentionally soften that instinct.

I’m not claiming to be above thin-slicing, I still do it like everyone else. What I am saying is that the lesson taught me to extend grace, especially to those with… let’s say, unconventional fashion choices. The ones wearing formal blazers to the gym, strolling in bridesmaid gowns, or forgetting that innerwear affects outerwear.

On a lighter note, consider this your gentle reminder: Dress the way you want to be addressed.
